The e-commerce boom in Spain has also encouraged small and medium-sized companies, such as the Andalusian company Nortembio, to launch sales abroad.
The use of marketplaces is one of the most popular ways for businesses. On Amazon, according to the company’s own latest reports, the 12,000 small and medium-sized Spanish companies that sell through its platform registered more than 650 million euros in exports, 30% more than the previous year, when the number of SMEs on Amazon exceeded 9,000.
When e-commerce had not yet reached its peak, a Spanish company, based in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz), decided to launch itself into online sales by teaming up with internet giant Amazon. Nortembio has chosen this marketplace to market its organic products, first in Spain and, in a short time, throughout Europe. Currently, the company’s strategy is based on e-commerce, especially abroad, where 75% of its annual turnover is generated.
E-commerce between countries in Europe is growing at twice the rate of domestic e-commerce, with more than 70% of European online shoppers ordering cross-border, according to Euromonitor 2020 data. The survey “Digital and global: the future of Spanish small businesses” conducted by Alibaba Group, reveals that 39% of the Spanish small businesses surveyed plan to sell their products and services outside Spain for the first time in 2021. However, Jose Luis Vázquez, manager of Nortembio, warns that “you have to offer a good product that is competitive, because only the best sell on Amazon and, in the not too distant future, the rest will not sell”.
The option of selling abroad is becoming more and more complicated, which is why in recent years marketplaces have become a great ally for SMEs. Thus, experts argue that this also means an increase in competition that will affect the vast majority of small and medium-sized enterprises. “Not everyone will be able to surf the e-commerce wave,” Nortembio explains.
The company
, which sells an average of 3,000 products a day, had a turnover of more than €7 million from Amazon in 2021. By 2022, they expect to increase that figure exponentially. Now it continues its search for new projects, focusing on innovation and integration in different markets at a global level.
